Day 2 in Iceland:
Today was my second day of the internship with UNDRA.
In the morning, we clarified some organizational questions and started planning the next few days. We also discussed the creation of content for social media and I can bring in my own ideas and am already excited about the implementation!
At lunchtime, we set off towards Kjarr with Larissa Silja (that’s her stable here in Iceland) and first drove to the foals and mares. They live on a very large pasture and the offspring can grow up well there. We took photos of the foals and I’m excited to see how they develop. I’m sure I’ll hear from them again in a few years when they’re presented at tournaments or breeding tests.
From the foal meadow we went on to Kjarr to the riding horses. There, we loaded a horse for sale onto the trailer to film riding videos with a beautiful backdrop. This mare will be presented at the UNDRA SALES SHOW.
On Kjarr itself, I was able to get to know the typical stable concept in Iceland: Here, there are lots of boxes in the stable, a place for hay, a tack room, a heated coffee room and a riding hall directly next door. This means that training can take place in winter even when the weather is bad or there is a lot of snow! There are paddocks and meadows around the stable where the horses are let out every day. At night they are mostly in the stable.
In the afternoon, we worked on the online sales catalogue for the UNDRA SALES SHOW, which we hope will be able to go online soon.
In addition to the great horses and all the new impressions, another highlight of the day was seeing the Northern Lights at night! The conditions were perfect, it was very cold and there were no clouds in the sky, which meant that the Northern Lights were easy to see even without a camera.
Sunny weather is forecast for the next few days. There are more appointments for tomorrow to take pictures of the horses for sale so that we can publish the online sales catalogue as quickly as possible.
I’m looking forward to it!
A land of fire and ice, with more sheep than inhabitants, characterized by a unique nature! This is just a brief description of such a diverse country. While a volcano may erupt on one side of the country, you can hike a glacier, admire the Northern Lights, or take a bath in a hot spring on the other side of the country - at the same time.
This not only speaks for diversity, but also for spontaneity, which is also reflected in the changeable weather in Iceland. A popular Icelandic saying is "If you do not like the current weather, just wait for five minutes".
In contrast to this inconsistency, one thing is constant and that is the enthusiasm for Icelandic horses! The Vikings brought horses to the island in the 9th century.
